World Immunization Day

Updated: Feb 4, 2023

Every November 10th is World Immunization Day. This day is celebrated to make people aware of the importance of being vaccinated against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Immunization is the process of conferring immunity or resistance to an infectious disease, usually through the administration of a vaccine. Immunizations help protect children from life-threatening diseases. It also helps reduce the spread of disease to others. Vaccines stimulate the body's immune system to protect people from subsequent infections and illnesses. Babies are born with natural immunity from their mothers through breastfeeding. This immunity gradually declines as the baby's own immune system begins to develop. Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective health investments he has, and vaccination does not require major lifestyle changes.

According to WHO, vaccination is a proven tool for controlling and eliminating life-threatening infectious diseases, estimated to prevent 2-3 million deaths each year, but worldwide 18.7 million infants have not yet received basic vaccines.

India has one of the largest Universal Immunization Programs (UIP) in the world in terms of volume of vaccines used, number of beneficiaries targeted, geographical distribution and human resources involved . UIP has been in operation for over 30 years, but in the first year of life she was able to fully vaccinate only 65% of children, and immunization coverage growth has stagnated. The Indian government launched the Indra Dhanush Mission in her December 2014 to ensure that all children are fully vaccinated. The ultimate goal of the program is to ensure full immunization with all available vaccines for children and pregnant women by the age of two. All vaccines are available free of charge under this program.
